Named for that time of year when the sun sits close to the horizon and casts a particular glow portending that winter is imminent, Auburn Skies features a wide, densely patterned, mirrored cable joined at the crown by a trio of chain links and a tapered chain link nape. Auburn Skies is the perfect transition piece for when those chilly winds begin to blow.

The pattern is fully charted, but also includes complete written directions so the ability to read a chart is not necessary to work this pattern.

  • Crocheted Provisional Cast-On Photo Tutorial
  • Top to Bottom Kitchener Join Photo Tutorial

The pattern directs you how to treat every single stitch in your graft. No guessing and no worries!

GAUGE:

30 sts/34.5 rows to 4” x 4” (10 cm x 10 cm) in pattern stitch (Center Medallion), blocked (widthwise only).

The headband is provisionally cast on and then worked flat. It is finished by joining the two ends with a Kitchener graft.

To work this pattern, you will need to know:

  • Knit and purl stitches
  • Increase and decrease stitches – LLI, RLI, P2TOG, SSP
  • Cable stitches – 2/1 LPC, 2/2 LC, 2/2 LPC, 2/1 RPC, 2/2 RC, 2/2 RPC, 2/2/2 RRC
  • Provisional cast-on
  • Kitchener grafting – top to bottom

YARN:

Allow approx 105 yds (96 m) of worsted weight yarn.

Avoid highly variegated and/or excessively fuzzy yarn as it will obscure the cable pattern. Avoid yarns that stretch and do not recover – ie, cotton, alpaca, etc.

NEEDLES:

US 6 (4 mm) double-pointed, circular or single-pointed needles
Or any size needed to obtain correct gauge and length to suit number of stitches.

NOTIONS:

50” (127 cm) scrap contrasting color worsted yarn (for provisional cast-on)
8” (20.3 cm) scrap contrasting color fingering weight or lighter yarn/thread (optional, for Kitchener lifeline)
Tapestry/blunt yarn needle
T-pins (optional, for blocking)
