With warm spring breezes melting the remaining ice and snow, water begins to flow at gravity’s insistence, from the hills and outcroppings to the streams below.

Inspired by such imagery, the reversible Spring Runoff Scarf offers lacy, little “tributaries” on either side which feed into a winding, short row, garter stitch “stream” at its center. All at once quirky and whimsical, but truly inspired by nature.

This is a scarf that you can wear LOTS of different ways. Have fun with it!

SIZE(S):

Finished, blocked scarves measure approx 66” (167.6 cm) long / 80” (203.2 cm) long respectively and 10” (25.4 cm) wide including edging which accounts for approx 5” (12.7 cm) of width.

CHARTED/WRITTEN:

The pattern is fully charted, but also includes complete written directions so the ability to read a chart is not necessary to work this pattern.

GAUGE:

16 stitches/32 rows to 4” x 4” (10 cm x 10 cm) in garter stitch, blocked.

Scarf is made by using short rows to create wedges, which in turn create arcs. The right side of the work alternates as each arc is worked in the opposite direction. Lace edging is worked simultaneously. The pictured, purple scarf sample is 11 arcs long while the teal scarf is 13 arcs long.

To work this pattern, you will need to know:

  • Cable cast-on
  • Knit and purl stitches
  • Increase and decrease stitches – YO, K2TOG
  • Short rows
  • Slipped stitches
  • Russian bind off (instructions included)

YARN:

461 – 609 yards (422 – 557 m) sport weight yarn.

Look for a yarn with good stitch definition and little to no halo. Slight tonals work well, but highly variegated yarn will distract from the lace pattern.

NEEDLES:

US 5 (3.75 mm) 10” (25 cm) straight needles
Or any size needed to obtain correct gauge.

NOTIONS:

Tapestry/blunt yarn needle
(2) Stitch markers
Small stitch holder
T-pins
