The Falling Leaves beret pattern evokes the essence of the season for which it was named with a border of leaves swirling one into another around its perimeter. This lovely leaf stitch pattern is a modification of Barbara Walker’s timeless ‘Fern Lace’ pattern. Additional details include twisted rib and a twelve-point star raised decrease on the crown.

SIZE(S):
One size. Beret brim fits a medium adult head size of approximately 20” – 22” (51 cm – 56 cm). Blocked beret circumference is approximately 34” (86 cm).
CHARTED/WRITTEN:
The pattern stitch is charted, but pattern also includes complete written directions so the ability to read a chart is not necessary to work this pattern.
GAUGE:
22 stitches/24 rounds to 4” x 4” (10 cm x 10 cm) in stockinette stitch, unblocked.
Beret is worked in the round from the ribbing up.
To work this pattern, you will need to know:
- Knit and purl stitches
- Increase and decrease stitches – YO, KFB, M1L, M1R, K2TOG, SSK
- Twisted stitches – KTBL
YARN:
175 – 180 yards (160 – 165 m) of worsted weight yarn.
A worsted weight yarn with good stitch definition and little to no halo is recommended. Slight tonals will work, but highly variegated yarn will distract from the lace pattern.
NEEDLES:
US 6 (4 mm) 16” (40 cm) circular
US 6 (4 mm) 7” (20 cm) double-pointed
Or any size needed to obtain correct gauge.
